Class Descriptions

Instinct

In the Instinct Class, the course is set up with a tunnel and bales for the dog to climb. Three tubes are placed in plain sight on the far side of the tunnel from the starting area. One tube is empty, one has rat litter, and the other a live rat.   The dog must run from the starting area to the tubes, and signal the owner which tube contains the rat within one minute.   The dog does not have to go through the tunnel or do a climb.  This is an optional class, but many people like to use this as a warmup to novice.

Novice

In the Novice Class, the dog and handler start from the start box near the opening of the tunnel.  There are three tubes hidden amoung the straw bales.  One tube is empty, one has rat litter, and the other a live rat. During their run the dog must at some point go through the tunnel and climb on a bale and find the rat within 2 minutes.  When the rat is found, the owner must yell "Rat" to the judge.   If the dog has already gone through the tunnel and done a climb, the timing stops, but if not, the owner must re-direct the dog to finish the course by getting the dog to go through the tunnel and/or climb on a bale.   In a Trial, if the dog/handler team have a successful run, they receive one leg towards their Novice title.  It takes three qualifying times to obtain the Novice title.   Since this is a Fun Match, it does not qualify as a leg towards a title.

Open

After obtaining the Novice title, the dog may be entered in the Open Class.  In the Open Class, the dog and handler start from the start box near the opening of a larger, L shaped tunnel. There are two rats plus extra tubes hidden amoung the straw bales.  During their run the dog must at some point go through the tunnel and climb on a bale and find the rats within 2.5 minutes. When the rats are found, the owner must yell "Rat" to the judge. If the dog has already gone through the tunnel and done a climb, the timing stops, but if not, the owner must re-direct the dog to finish the course by getting the dog to go through the tunnel and/or climb on a bale. In a Trial, if the dog/handler team have a successful run, they receive one leg towards their Open title. It takes three qualifying times to obtain the Open title.

Higher levels are called Senior and Master, but are not offered at this Fun Match.
